Risks and damages of artificial intelligence to society

During a panel at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Microsoft chief economist Michael Schwarz expressed concern about the potential harm that could be caused by the malicious use of artificial intelligence (AI) by bad actors. Schwarz warned that he is confident that AI will end up in the wrong hands and could cause real damage, citing its potential use in elections as an example. He called for regulation on the matter, stating that the benefits of regulation to society should outweigh any costs. While some countries have already banned the use of certain AI technologies, such as Italy's ban on the ChatGPT program, other countries such as the United Kingdom have announced plans to regulate the matter. Microsoft, which recently invested $10 billion in OpenAI, is working on mitigating the potential harm from AI tools. Schwarz emphasized that AI will revolutionize the way in which companies operate and make people more productive.

Microsoft chief economist Michael Schwarz has said that while AI won't change anything in the short term, it will change everything in the long run, as has been the case with every technology in the past. A report by the World Economic Forum predicts that 42% of business tasks will be automated by 2027, compared to 34% currently, with reasoning and decision-making tasks set to be automated by 35%. Areas specialized in AI and machine learning are expected to have the greatest job growth potential, according to the report. However, a Goldman Sachs study suggests that around 300 million jobs could be automated. IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, has warned that up to 30% of customer service roles could be replaced by AI and automation within five years, resulting in 7,800 job losses out of the nearly 26,000 who currently perform such tasks at IBM.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has said that the company will pause hiring for roles that are expected to be replaced by AI in the coming years. He cited HR and administrative tasks as examples of replaceable roles, but said that software development roles, which are at the core of IBM, will not be affected. The UN has warned of the dangers of using AI and called for responsibility from companies after ChatGPT was found to be capable of altering images, replicating voices, and creating texts. Tech leaders such as Steve Wozniak, Jaan Tallinn, and Elon Musk have called for large-scale AI experiments to be temporarily halted due to the risks they pose to society, and the Spanish Agency for Data Protection is investigating OpenAI, the company that owns the ChatGPT service, for possible regulatory breaches.
