artificial intelligence a terrifying warning

Geoffrey Hinton, the renowned pioneer of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has resigned from Google in order to more freely express his concerns about the potential dangers posed by these technologies. In an interview with The New York Times, Hinton, often referred to as the "godfather" of AI, expressed regret about dedicating his career to this field at the age of 75.

Hinton's voice adds to the growing number of specialists warning about the dangers of AI, particularly in light of recent developments such as the launch of text bots like ChatGPT and the significant investments made by tech giants in this area. Hinton cautioned against the rapid pace of progress, stating that it's hard to prevent bad actors from using AI for malicious purposes.

Hinton fears that the internet will be flooded with false texts, photos, and videos in the short term, making it difficult for citizens to distinguish what is real. He also believes that these technologies could ultimately replace many workers and pose a threat to humanity. Hinton received the Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research last year, along with three other AI pioneers, for his work.

Hinton suggested that work in this area should be halted until there is a better understanding of whether AI can be controlled. His views are in line with other public calls from technology sector leaders who have asked for experiments to be temporarily suspended.

Hinton later clarified on Twitter that he is not leaving Google to criticize the company, but rather to talk about the dangers of AI without having to worry about the impact his opinions might have on his former employer. According to Hinton, Google has acted responsibly in this area.
