Google introduces an artificial intelligence version of its search engine
In a bid to compete with its emerging competitor, OpenAI, Google is overhauling its 25-year-old internet search engine with artificial intelligence (AI) and incorporating digital chat-like features.
During its yearly conference, the internet giant valued at $1.4 trillion (£1.1 trillion) provided a glimpse into the most extensive redesign of its search engine ever undertaken. This new iteration includes a "conversational" interface in addition to its widely recognized search bar.
Despite remaining a core feature, the search bar - which has undergone few modifications since its initial launch - will now permit users to engage in question-and-answer-style conversations with it.
In place of offering just a list of links, Google's search engine will now present more detailed textual responses and explanations - created by AI - at the top of its search results. For instance, users looking for travel ideas, recipes, or shopping recommendations can inquire with Google to generate suggestions for them.
These novel characteristics put Google in direct competition with Microsoft, a competitor tech giant that is collaborating with startup OpenAI to revamp its own internet search technology. Since Microsoft introduced its own wave of AI products, Google, which initially launched its search engine in 1998, has been striving to remain competitive.
Technology firms are gambling on the notion that individuals will demand more extensive and nuanced internet search responses.
Despite this, the recent advancements are likely to exacerbate concerns that users will increasingly rely on search engines for in-depth answers, rather than consulting internet publishers or newspapers.
Google also previewed various other AI tools, including enhancements to its standalone chatbot Bard. These updates entail launching Bard in numerous languages and enabling it to construct and modify code. Moreover, Bard will be released from its trial phase to millions of internet users.
